Positive Behavior Referral - As a way to recognize our students who are going above and beyond in a positive way, our staff is rolling out a new referral. Starting Monday, December 9th we will recognize students who are displaying extra special behaviors with a Positive Behavior Referral. This could include, but is not limited to, going out of their way to do something kind for a peer, helping a staff member with a difficult task, keeping others safe, etc. Students who receive a positive referral will be called down to the office and congratulated by Mrs. White and will receive a special ticket worth 10 Paw Prints for their efforts. This new program will highlight the already wonderful things that our students are doing at Cumberland on a daily basis.
Holiday Hoopla - The Des Plaines Youth Commission is hosting a Holiday Hoopla at the Des Plaines Public Library on Saturday, December 14th from 1:00-3:00. This fun event for the whole family will feature a visit from Santa, crafts and games for the kids, hot chocolate and much more. Click here for the details.
Abandoning Vehicles - Parents please do not leave your car unattended in the parking lot when dropping off or picking up your child from school. We also ask that you have your child ready to get out of the car right away in the morning so that cars behind you are not held up. If everyone follows the traffic patterns, and is patient, we can keep our children safe.
Tree Lighting Ceremony Today - We hope you can join us today (Friday, December 6th) for the Des Plaines Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony (Metropolitan Square - 647 Metropolitan Way) starting at 4:00 p.m. This is a fun and free event for the entire family. Cumberland students worked on ornaments in art class to decorate our school tree. If you are available to help decorate, please contact Theresa Wager at [email protected]. Click here to view the event details. We hope to see you there!
Paw Market Volunteers - We still have some openings for parent volunteers at our upcoming Paw Market. This event is a favorite among our students because they get to "spend" their hard earned Paw Prints to buy a lot of awesome items. The Paw Market is funded through our PTO and is the biggest incentive for students to follow the Cougar Code. There are still three slots for Wednesday, December 18th from 1:00-3:30 and four for Thursday, December 19th from 9:00-12:00. Click here to sign up.
Read For The Record - On November 7, many of our Cumberland classrooms participated in the program called "Read for the Record." In this program, students and staff from around the world all read the same book on the same day. This year we read the book Thank You, Omu. Well, the statistics are finally in! Cumberland was part of 49 states and 34 countries who participated this year, and we were part of 2.1 million readers who helped READ FOR THE RECORD! Congratulations to the students and staff who participated toward these awesome goals!
PTO News....
- Movie Nights Canceled - Due to some unfortunate events at the last Movie Night (including students not being accompanied by parents/guardians, students not being respectful of the building, disrespecting the custodial staff, and not being considerate of other attendees), the Cumberland PTO has decided to cancel the remaining movie nights for this year. We may revisit these events next year if we we can be sure that the students and parents who attend will honor the Cougar Code.
- McAlisters Dine & Share - While finishing your shopping before winter break, join us for a Dine & Share at McAlister's Deli (1109 N Elmhurst Rd, Mt Prospect) on Monday, December 16th from 5:00-9:00 p.m. Cumberland School will receive 20% of the proceeds for the evening. Flyers will be coming home with students soon. Please present a screenshot or hard copy of the flyer when ordering.
- Chess Scholars is starting the winter session on December 18th. Would you like to win a FREE Chess Scholars Scholarship for your child? We are looking for a parent who can support primary students in getting to the class at 3:30; then helping with the dismissal of students to their parents and to the SPARK program at 4:30. If you are interested and available to help every Wednesday during the program, email Theresa Wager at [email protected]. Click here to view the flyer.
- Dine & Share Thank You - Thank you to all the families that came out to our Dine & Share at Charcoal Delights during teacher conferences. $150 was generously donated back to the PTO because of all of you who showed up. We appreciate your continued support and love to see the smiles!
