Spinning Fidget and Cube Ban - We have had a significant increase in the number of students bringing spinning fidgets and cube fidgets to school. Due to the distraction that these items cause in the classroom, and the fact that many have already gone "missing," they will not be allowed at school. We do realize the sensory value of fidgets for some students, so please contact your child's teacher for other options.
Parents Entering The Building - As a reminder, any parent or visitor entering the school must check in at the main office. Lately, we have seen an increase in parents entering the building, especially during arrival and dismissal times. We work very hard to keep students and staff safe at all times and that means that we have to be in control of who is entering the school. We appreciate you adhering to these guidelines for all concerned.
Kindergarten Orientation - If you have a child who will be starting kindergarten at Cumberland next year, please join us for Kindergarten Orientation at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17 for general education and the BEST program, and 4:30 for ELS/ST students. Again this year, every family attending will receive a "Welcome to Kindergarten Kit" valued at $50, and you will have a chance to win an iPad at each session. Click here to view the details.

New Cumberland Website - The D62 Cumberland website has been streamlined and updated, which includes a live calendar that will give you upcoming events beyond what is shared in this newsletter. Earth Week Participants - The PTO would like to thank and congratulate all the Cumberland students who participated in the Earth Week Pledge! Students demonstrated very creative ways of Reducing, Reusing, Recycling, and Renewing. Keep up the good work on protecting our earth everyday! The winners for the class participation prize went to Mrs. Brown's 1st graders! For their effort, the class received a copy of The Lorax. 2nd graders won the honor of highest participation, and all those students won earth keychains. Thanks again to all who participated!
Fitness Gram Testing - Beginning this school year, all Illinois public schools are required to administer a physical fitness assessment to students in grades 3-12. District 62 has used FitnessGram as part of its fitness curriculum since 2009. During the months of April and May, District 62 will once again use this assessment in 3rd-8th grade P.E. classes. FitnessGram assessments focus on the areas of aerobic capacity, flexibility, muscular endurance, and muscular strength. Districts are required to report the fitness data to the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) for 5th and 7th grades. The fitness data reported to ISBE will not contain any individual student name or individual assessment results.
